Skincare During Chemotherapy

Going through chemotherapy is hard on both the mind and your body, and it’s even harder to predict what side-effects you might feel. It is important that while undergoing chemotherapy, you take very good care of your hair, skin and nails to prevent any further damage.

Here are a few things to look for in skincare products while undergoing chemotherapy/radiation treatments:

  1. Much of the skincare in the market these days is designed with the goal of helping the user stay younger-looking, and one of the ways to accomplish this is to exfoliate, peel & strip away the top layer of skin cells. When you are dealing with chemo, heavy exfoliants and harsh scrubs are not appropriate. These types of moisturizers will cause further damage to your skin.
  2. Chemo can interfere with your nervous system. You may develop strange reactions to things that have never bothered you before. The last thing you want to do is bombard your skin with new potential allergens, so limit the use of new products against your skin.
  3. Some skincare is heavy with drying agents and “anti-oil” ingredients – included to prevent shiny, oily skin. During chemo, skin tends to be dry, so look for a skincare brand that delivers moisture, rather than stripping it away.
